Pharmacokinetics and Indications
Testosterone is an androgen hormone produced in the human body, mostly in male mammals. It is responsible for the majority of physical characteristics associated with adult males.
This hormone is produced by the gonads; testes in men, and ovaries in women, though the adrenal glands also produces it in small quantities in both sexes. Testosterone is not only important for the production of sperm in men and the enhancement of libido in both men and women, it also enhances overall well being such as increased energy.
It is responsible for alerting the body and ensuring the production of red blood cells, and the maintenance of strong muscles and bones after puberty. Although testosterone is produced at an average of forty to sixty times more in adult males, females are actually more sensitive to the hormone.
Possible Side Effects
Aside from its natural production and functions within the human body as well as being given to meet the body’s need for it, testosterone has been used for many other conditions over the years.
The use of testosterone for various other conditions have shown varied outcomes, with some successes such as penile enlargement, height surges, bone marrow stimulation, reversal of anemia, and apetite stimulation. Unfortunately, high rates of side effects and problems were also experienced which include infertility, decrease in sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and osteoporosis, among others.
Despite these side effects, testosterone was proclaimed an antiaging miracle drug by the late 1940s (see Pail de Kruif’s ‘The Male Hormone’). Testosterone used in Androgen Replacement Therapy has been especially sought after by those experiencing decline in testosterone production due to age.
Effective Dose
Beginners: 50 mg / day or every other day
Hobby: 100 mg / day or every other day
Professionals: 100 – 200 mg / day
Women: 10 – 50 mg / day or every other day (max. 6 weeks)
Use for: 12 – 52 weeks
